Arsenal of Freethought

As my first "real" post, I have decided to share what I've taken to calling my "Arsenal of Freethought." It's basically a collection of Bible verses, informative websites, articles, videos, and reddit posts/comments that I find especially thought-provoking or useful. My hope is to help others in any way possible with these links, whether it is to answer questions, provide clarity, cause laughter, or even give comfort that there are other like-minded people out there.

Bible Verses / Analysis

2. What the Bible says about abortion:

• Exodus 21:22-25 (KJV) - "if a man causes a woman to accidentally miscarry, he must pay a fine" (in other words, the death of a fetus is not considered a capital offense)
• Numbers 5:11-31 (KJV) - "how to carry out a church-sanctioned abortion"
3. Verses to use as "zingers":
• Matthew 6:5-7 (NKJV) - Double whammy; "don't pray out in the open like the hypocrites" (self-explanatory) and "don't use vain repetitions" (i.e. praying the Rosary)
• Matthew 19:24 (KJV) - "you can't go to heaven if you're rich"
• Matthew 5:17-19 (KJV) - "the Old Testament definitely still applies" and then hit them with the next one...
• James 2:10 (KJV) - "if you obey every biblical law but break even one, you're guilty of breaking the whole thing"
• Mark 9:43-46 (KJV) - "cut off your hands/feet if they cause you to sin" (What's that? You cheated on your wife/girlfriend because you were "thinking with the wrong head"? Read this. Here's a knife. You know what to do.)
•  Isaiah 45:7 (KJV) - "the source of evil, contrary to popular belief, is actually God himself"
• Matthew 7:1-5 (KJV) - "if you're going to judge people, be ready to be judged by the same standards, you hypocrite"
4. The Dark Side of "Christian Morality":
• Slavery:
• 1 Corinthians 7:20-24 (KJV) - "Christians are literal slaves of Jesus"
• Ephesians 6:5-9 (NIV) - "slaves, be good slaves. Masters, don't be bad to your slaves." So as long as you're nice to them, it's okay to own slaves?
• Leviticus 25:44-46 (NIV) - "yup, slavery is definitely okay with God."
• Senseless Violence / Killing:
• Luke 12:47 (KJV) - "slaves will be flogged for disobeying their masters"
• 2 Kings 2:23-25 (NIV) - God sends two bears to maul 42 kids because they called Elisha a "baldhead"
• Leviticus 20:9 (KJV) - "the sentence for cursing your parents is death"
• Exodus 21:17 (KJV) - "the sentence for cursing your parents is death"
• Deuteronomy 21:18-21 (KJV) - "the sentence for being stubborn and rebellious to your parents is death by stoning"
• Numbers 15:32-35 (NIV) - death by stoning for gathering wood on the Sabbath day
• Leviticus 20:13 (KJV) - "the punishment for homosexual intercourse is death"
• Deuteronomy 20:16-18 (KJV) - genocide ordered by God
• Judges 21:10-24 (NIV) - God gives soldiers orders to kill everyone in Jabesh Gilead who isn't a virgin, and take the virgin women for themselves
• Numbers 25:4-9 (NIV) - regicide, genocide, murder
• Incest / Sexual Misconduct:
• Genesis 19:31-36 (NIV) - Lot's daughters date raped him on two separate occasions so both of them could get pregnant
• Deuteronomy 22:28-29 (NIV) - "if a man rapes a virgin, his only punishment is that he must pay the girl's father a fine and then he has to marry her"
• Miscellaneous Hatefulness:
• Leviticus 21:16-24 (NIV) - discrimination against people with defects
• Luke 12:51 (NIV) - "Jesus came to bring division, not peace"
